Family Exercise By Dr. Oz

Family exerciseLet’s face it, technologies sometimes teach us to be physically less active. Is your family getting enough or even a bit of exercise in a day? Most probably they’re not, because of increasing hours in front of computers and TV. Technology has lots to offer.

Children needs at least 60 minutes a day to do some exercise and shed some sweat. Less than 60 minutes of active
physical activities may lead to health issues like heart disease, diabetes and obesity. Children don’t need to particularly join exercise class. Activities such as tag, basketball, playing with soccer ball, or simply walking with their friends in neighborhood are a good form of exercise. When the sun is out, there is actually no reason not to go outside and enjoy. If they want they can play chasing bubbles and play hoola-hoop for more fun. Engaging your kids to simple outdoor chores to make their time useful such as raking some leaves, watering the plants can be a good form of exercise too.

Kids’ Healthy Eating May Open Doors to Healthy Careers

ProStart is a national, career-building program for high school students who are interested in culinary arts and restaurant and foodservice management. It offers a two-year career-building program where high school students study in the classroom, participate in mentored work experiences, and test their skills in local and national competitions.

In Maryland, the ProStart curriculum is taught to about 4,500 students in 92 schools. Nationwide, over 83,000 students in 47 states are involved in the program that focuses on front- and back-of-the-house restaurant operations.

“Basic home economics takes a look at food from inside a house,” said LeDeana Wentzel, director of workforce development at RAMEF. “ProStart looks at it from the outside and what you’d look at from a restaurant perspective.” That includes costs associated with individual servings, nutrition and presentation.

First lady michelle obama on Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010The signing of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 raised mixed reactions across the nation. The bill will give schools an extra 6-cent increase for each meal served.

Workplace Wellness More Important Than Ever

workplace wellnessThe employees are one of the most important aspects in the workplace. Without them, any corporation or business would not function well or function at all. In order to maintain a good business, employers must learn to take care of their employees. In most cases, anything which affects the employees will usually affect the business too.

The atmosphere in the workplace has a very powerful effect on an employee’s health. If the employees are happy with their job, they tend to be more productive. On the other hand, when there is a negative environment in the workplace, stress becomes abundant. Stress can bring a major impact on a person’s mental and physical health. Stress mixed with an unhealthy lifestyle lead to serious health risk resulting to employee absenteeism. Poor diets, lack of exercise, smoking, lack of sleep are big contributing factors that have lead to many different illnesses that these employees face. These health concerns have great effect on the employees’ performance and output at work which leads to more problems and losses for most companies.

Americans Demand Access to Health Food in School and at the Office

The 1980s witnessed Massachusetts issuing coupons for farmers’ markets to low-income women who were pregnant or breastfeeding, or for young children who are undernourished. This is the state’s move to promote markets as the place of preventive help. Today, there are additional thirty-six states that are adapting the program aimed at women and younger children.

It was clear that the purpose of the program is to make sure the people are having easy access to healthful food as opposed to sodas and chips which don’t have any nutritional value except or more sodium and artificial preservatives. But now more people are also protesting and demanding for equal access to healthy food particularly in schools and at the offices.

Healthy Snacks for Soccer Matches

Kids are playing soccerDo you have a son who loves to play soccer? If you do, then this article is just right for you. For sure, you have gone through those days, when you have been preparing snacks for your son and even the whole team as well.

But you wouldn’t want your son (and his team) munching on unhealthy foods, right? You definitely would not want parents to come up to you and suggest you prepare healthy snacks the next you prepare snacks for them. If you also serve them with spinach and organic mushrooms, then prepare for trouble.

Healthy School Kids Is An Idea Whose Time Is Now

Healthy kids grow to have healthy minds. And kids with a healthy mind can enjoy a brighter future ahead of them. Unfortunately in today’s fast-paced environment, keeping a child healthy is not just all about feeding him/her nutritious food, but also about paying attention to the child’s overall wellness and safety.

The kids come to school with a lot on their plate, and you see it all the time. There’s a concern that they’re never really able to be a kid and be able to play,” says Lesley Martin, a former principal of Terra Linda Middle School in San Carlos who now works as one of the District’s Wellness Coordinator.

Healthy Children Great Ideas

kids eating healthy mealCampaign against childhood obesity and advocacies for healthy living proliferate across the nation. Different programs, flyers, posters, advertisement and press releases abound to get the message across. But how can you get the message across to children? Is there a way for them to have an idea on why they need to stay healthy and who helps them stay healthy?

To send message to children, you have to bring out your artistic and creative side. You have to use attention-grabbing details in designs to be posted on conspicuous places like school bulletin boards. Researchers prove that children perceive more attractive designs than less attractive ones and they are mostly visual thinkers or can remember sequences and messages thru photographs.

Vending Business That Focuses on Healthy Snacks

Most vending machines now offer healthier food optionsOften time life gets too busy for us to spend time on preparing home cooked meals and snacks. We rush to school or at the office and see the ever convenient vending machine. With just a touch of the button and some cash, you get your snack instaxtly. But this practice doesn’t really do much for our health. With the soaring costs of medicines and health care, it is really difficult to be in an unhealthy state. With this growing concern, vending machine business owners have thought of new choices of healthier food to sell in their machines. Some of the food and drinks being sold are the following:

  • Refrigerated foods: apple slices, bananas, celery sticks, babycarrots, grapes and pineapple chunks are just some of the new options that can be found
  • Flavored waters: water is still the best choice to keep you hydrated. Sodas and artificial fruit juices contain too much sugar and higher calories while coffee has caffeine and too much of it isn’t good either. Today bottled waters come in different tasty flavors like apple, raspberry, lemon and grape.
  • Natural fruit or vegetable juices- these contain vitamins that can help boost our immune system.
  • Chips: Yes you heard it right; potato chips can also be healthy as long as they are baked and low in sodium.
  • Other snacks: nuts, trail mix and granola bars are other healthy options that can also be found in vending machines
