As Dr. Mehmet Oz arrived at John Marshall High School in Cleveland, students greeted him with delight and all the whoops and hollers that you can think of. Dr. Mehmet Oz has been a heath rock star icon to everyone including kids. The way he educated and sent his message to the kids made a big impact to them. Dr. Oz was introduced by the Cleveland’s Clinic chief wellness officer; at the same time his co-author and friend. Dr. Roizen singled out overwhelming accomplishments of Dr. Oz.Dr. Oz message for the kids was to get them to choose healthier foods and make better choices in their diets in order to avoid the ravages of early onset diabetes and childhood obesity. His message was about their future and how to avoid childhood obesity by making smarter healthier choices while at school and in vending machines. His message to the student is this on his speech at the Clinic’s Innovation Summit:
“See yourself as health activists…You are the ones who can change yourselves and your community by making healthier food choices when possible.”
Then he showed them a photograph of a pink and a very healthy lung, and the lung of a smoker that is tar-spotted and moth eaten. The student saw the big difference and the pictures just gave the students the desired impact. He also let them watch video representation of plaque forming in the arteries that happens even at the age of 20, then the explosion into a stroke or heart attack. He also showed them a picture of a healthy kidney and next to it is a damaged and dead kidney of the same body that was caused by high blood pressure.
There are two people, or should I say women who helped him in stepping out and sending his message of health to everyone: His wife Lisa, who made a really hard effort of pushing him to TV to reach wider audience. Miss Oprah Winfrey who made him a regular guest on her show before getting “The Doctor Oz Show” was seen on air. Miss Oprah Winfrey also taught him the following perception. “That people don’t change based on what they know, but what they feel. Emotions are responsible for 90 percent of the changes we make.”
Dr. Oz was non judgmental. It is his typical style. According to him, it is more challenging for the new generation to carry the health message to their families and friends. Because of this, the kids had lots of questions in their mind. He answered them hoping to clear their mind.
