healthy eating in schools

Healthy eating values is back to school

Children spend a lot of their time in school. Most of the time students rush in the morning and often eat at school instead of eating breakfast at home. Parents would think that their kids will be okay with what they will be eating in school but in reality it is not always the case. Most schools offer sweet cinnamon rolls, donuts or French toast for breakfast and pizzas, burritos and other fried greasy food for lunch. These type of food can increase your children’s chances of being overweight.

Today though, the government has been paying more attention to children’s nutrition and has instructed schools to serve healthier food choices and promote healthier lifestyle for kids and teens. Schools can serve whole grain food which contains more fiber and protein than white flour for breakfast while salads with low fat dressing, fruits and vegetables and other healthy and non-greasy dishes can be served during lunch.

High school students are also required to have gym class, this can be a good way of promoting physical activity to students. But gym class isn’t the only way for kids to have physical activity, parents should also encourage their kids to be involved with after school activities such as sports or other activities like dancing or doing exercise so their children can be more active and even develop their self-esteem. This would also be better for them rather than seeing them after school in front of the television with a bag of chips or spending hours playing video games.

Promoting healthy eating and physical activities in high schools can help prevent in developing a sedentary lifestyle for children. This would help them build a strong foundation for their lives as adults and reduce the many health risks too. A healthy lifestyle leads to better performance at school and can also spare your children from being the laughing stock at school. With a healthy body and a healthy mind, children are more likely to have more self-esteem than kids who are obese.

Check on your child’s high school and see if they are offering healthier food choices, if not then you can probably ask other parents to join you to talk with the school administrators and request for healthier options for your children. Our kids spend most of their time in school so schools shouldn’t only be a place for learning but for a healthy living too.  Middle school vending machines are where kids are first introduced to junk food in schools and the first thing that needs to offer healthy options to kids.
